Since the February 2021 winter storm, battery backup has gone from a nice-to-have to a non-negotiable for many DFW homeowners. Both Tesla Powerwall 3 and Enphase IQ Battery 5P are excellent products — but they’re built differently, and one will suit your home better than the other. Here’s how to choose.
Tesla Powerwall 3: The All-in-One Powerhouse
The Powerwall 3, released in 2024, is Tesla’s most capable home battery yet. Unlike its predecessors, the Powerwall 3 integrates a solar inverter directly into the unit — meaning it can function as your entire solar + storage system without a separate inverter. For new installs, this simplifies the hardware stack significantly.
Specs that matter for DFW
- Capacity: 13.5 kWh usable per unit
- Continuous power output: 11.5 kW (biggest improvement over Powerwall 2)
- AC or DC coupling: DC-coupled via built-in inverter for new solar installs
- Operating temperature: −4°F to 122°F — handles Texas summers and rare freezes
- App: Tesla app with real-time monitoring and storm watch pre-charging
DFW Advantage: Tesla’s Storm Watch feature auto-charges your Powerwall to 100% when weather alerts are issued for your area. For Texas, this is invaluable heading into storm season.
Enphase IQ Battery 5P: The Modular Approach
Enphase built its reputation on microinverters, and the IQ Battery 5P reflects that philosophy. Rather than one large battery, the IQ 5P uses a modular design: each unit is 5 kWh, and you stack as many as you need. Each unit has its own embedded microinverter — there’s no single point of failure.
Specs that matter for DFW
- Capacity: 5.0 kWh per unit, stackable up to 4 per system (20 kWh total)
- Continuous power: 3.84 kW per unit
- Best paired with Enphase IQ8 microinverter solar systems
- Enphase App: granular panel-level and battery monitoring
- Operating temp: −4°F to 113°F
| Feature | Tesla Powerwall 3 | Enphase IQ 5P (3-unit) |
|---|---|---|
| Usable Capacity | 13.5 kWh | 15 kWh |
| Continuous Power | 11.5 kW | 11.52 kW |
| Built-in Inverter | Yes (new installs) | Yes (each unit) |
| Modularity | Single unit | Per-unit expansion |
| Monitoring | Tesla App | Enphase App |
| Installed Cost (est.) | $12,000–$16,000 | $15,000–$20,000 |
Which One Should You Choose?
If you’re doing a new solar + storage install and want maximum simplicity with strong backup power, Powerwall 3 is typically the better value. The integrated inverter design reduces equipment cost and system complexity.
If you already have an Enphase microinverter solar system, or you want modular expansion over time, IQ Battery 5P integrates seamlessly and gives you granular control. For homes with higher backup demands — home offices, medical equipment, larger square footage — stacking IQ batteries can reach 20 kWh total, which is substantial.
Both will keep your lights on when ERCOT has problems. The right answer usually comes down to your existing system (if any), home size, and budget. Note that the federal residential ITC expired after 2025, so the financial comparison no longer includes a federal credit for customer-owned systems — factor that into your payback projections.
